A Message for the American Church

I sometimes highlight articles, music, or sermons I come across that move me to tears or worship. I generally publish these in my monthly Excellent or Praiseworthy posts, which have been inconsistent as of late. At any rate, I noticed Jon Guerra posted some new music this week, so I gave it a listen. Oh my! These songs are exactly what my heart has been feeling, but I’ve lacked words to express it. In these three songs, Jon finds the words. They feel a bit like political protest. He contrasts the kingdom of God with the kingdom of this world beautifully, creatively, and powerfully. I’d encourage you to give them a listen.

1. American Gospel

This song plays off the beatitudes to paint a picture that’s unbiblical but pursued by many today. These lyrics are brilliant but made me feel slightly uncomfortable at first: “Blessed are the powerful. Blessed are the rich. Blessed are the merciless and the hypocrites. They will inherit the empires passing. It’s the American Gospel.”

2. Nothing To Say To The New York Times

This song makes me think of classic Bob Dylan. It’s a protest of sorts, but spoken from the perspective of Jesus. It might be my favorite of the three.

3. Someone Like Jesus

The plea of this song is that we need a different approach to freedom, one that’s not necessarily political or economic. The answer won’t be found in political parties, their candidates, or their platforms. Nor will it be found in the American dream. The answer has always been and will always be Jesus.

Have a great week!
